Design Considerations

Things we have decided

  • Free-Standing Kiosk that reflects w-l
  • One Burner
    • Cheaper, easier, software doesn't support 2

Decisions we have to make

  • How will we update?
    • Auto-update?
      • Alex is reluctant, says it is MUCHO work.
      • Sam Disagrees, says it is necessary for future of FT.
    • CD Burning: Set or Checklist?
      • Alex says one set iso, says it is easier. Edit of Open Disc.
      • Sam would like to see a choice for the user. Many different isos or Iso compiler.
    • Which distro of Linux to run?
      • Ubuntu
      • Update: Debian is run by alex's server because ubuntu would not install on his machine. Should the production model use debian or ubuntu?

Requirements:

  • Answer the question: "What do you want the machine to do?" TASKS
    • work with a touchscreen,
    • connect to WiFi, and
    • runs the kiosk software.
  • What OS do you want to use?
  • What kind of hardware is supported for that OS?
  • Determine all component properties you'll need: hard drive size, CPU speed, e.g.
  • Comparison shop components (document shopping process with links)
  • Order components
  • Build machine
  • Install OS
  • Test machine hardware (benchmark if necessary)
  • Software dev and testing for TASKS
    • burn CD/DVDs,
    • work with a touchscreen,
    • connect to WiFi, and
    • runs the kiosk software.

Ideas Supplies to acquire (for prototype):
